Occurence: The essential oil of Chamomilla recutita (L.) RAUSCHERT syn. Matricaria recutita L. contains up to 50% (-)-alpha-bisabolol. The plant is grown mainly in central and eastern Europe, Egypt, and Argentina. Chamomile oil is a deep blue or bluish-green liquid that turns green and, finally, brown when exposed to light and air. Bisabolol and chamazulene (which is responsible for its deep blue colour) contribute to the anti-inflammatory properties of the genuine chamomile oil. Scientists have found bisabolol oxides in the essential oil, too.
The wood of a bush in New Caledonia, Myoporum grassifolium FORST, yields an essential oil, containing (-)-bisabolol in high concentration.(+)-Bisabolol occurs in leaf buds of some poplars.
